Production
Categories
The division of work is very intense within the
districts, between the companies which are specialised
in one or two distinct phases of production. It is rare
to see a company who undertakes all phases of the production
cycle.
Production within the industrial cluster is organised
in a vertical sense, that is to say, each step of the
production phase is carried out by companies who specialise
only in this particular phase.
Types of Companies within the
production chain:
- small craftworkshops, who produce semi-finished
products or carry out highly specialised work (wood
turning, bending, polishing, carving, varnishing, padding)
commissioned by the other local manufacturers;
- medium sized businesses who purchase semi-finished
goods and carry out the final stages of the production
cycle (assembling and finishing) and then sell the finished
product;
- small industrial enterprises who carry out
almost all of the production cycles, except for certain
types of work destined for the sub-supply market;
-medium sized industrial enterprises who are
able to incorporate the entire productive cycle but
are able to organise themselves in such a way, as to
farm out some of the production when they overloaded
with work but are then able to re-absorb production
during slack periods.

A
survey carried out in '99 outlined how the following
activities in the industrial cluster are distributed:
37% of companies manufacture finished goods,
27% semi-finished goods and components, 36%
carry out work for third parties

The
"great transformation", which distinguishes
the industrial cluster after the recession in the 80's,
had a lot to do with the relationship to the final
market. The fact that the district has been managed
by a minority of more structured companies, instead
of a huge complex of sub-supply manufacturers, has without
doubt made the difference. This would have resulted
instead, market directed (that is the industrial cluster
would have had to depend on the market "buying"
from them)instead the opposite policy has been adopted
( it is the districts that "attacks" and "conquers"
the market and not viceversa).
